Meet Green at Brown Upon arriving at the Clarence Brown Conference Center for your next business meeting or social event, you’ll discover the facility’s commitment to sustainability from the moment you park your car or bicycle. Guests arriving by electric, gas/hybrid, fuel efficient, low-emitting, or high occupancy vehicles can navigate to reserved parking spaces at the entrance. Two run-off ponds are more than pleasing landscape features; they provide non-potable water to the landscape irrigation system, supplemented by untreated well water during drought conditions. In addition, the landscape of indigenous native plants requires little maintenance and is drought tolerant. Notice the thermally efficient exterior walls made of regionally sourced materials, reducing transportation costs and carbon emissions. Additional energy efficient features include heat-reflective windows, and highly-reflective roofing which reduces heat absorption and energy consumption.
Inside, you’ll be walking on glass – specifically Lithocrete flooring, an innovative product made of 75 percent post-use glass that might have otherwise ended up in a landfill. This polished concrete floor conserves natural resources, contributes to a healthy indoor environment, and is heat and mildew resistant. The floor also requires no sealant or waxing, which saves water, electricity and people power. Walk on to find “cradle to cradle” carpet made from recycled materials that can also be recycled once it is in need of replacing. In addition, carpet squares were chosen to be easily replaced, which reduces waste and saves money. And, the carpet choice is more “green” because it was manufactured within 50 miles of the site further reducing the center’s carbon footprint by minimizing transportation fuel and shipping costs. After looking around, look up and take note of the amount of natural light available inside. Natural light is needed during the day for emotional comfort and cognitive functioning. Providing our clients these benefits is achieved without compromising energy consumption because the windows filter more solar energy than traditional windows which reduces electricity for cooling and lighting. So don’t be surprised if your guests are happier and think more clearly at the Clarence Brown Conference Center.
Take a deep breath of fresh air. The Clarence Brown Conference Center interior s furnishings emit low levels of volatile organic compounds. In addition, carbon dioxide monitoring equipment is also in use daily. We’ll leave the lights on for you… Motion-sensor lighting is used in many of the meeting spaces, as well as the restrooms, ensuring energy savings when these areas are not in use. Water-efficient plumbing saves almost 180,000 gallons of water per year – enough to fill 13 residential swimming pools! Motion-sensor hand dryers and recycled paper products further our commitment to the environment. As you walk throughout the Clarence Brown Conference Center, look for signs noting these Green products and practices in accordance with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards as defined by the U.S. Green Building Council. |
